If you are an electrician with a registered electrician card in London or anywhere in the UK, it is a must for you to know about BS 7671 2018 (the 18th edition of BS 7671).

Being a registered electrician, you need to have appropriate training to carry out inspection and testing of electrical installations. Proper training from a renowned vocational training provider is essential to ensure that you have the required knowledge and skills to fulfill the role and comply with BS 76:71:2018 standards.

While it may seem the cheapest way to look for information online and do self-study to understand the requirements of the authority, the best and recommended way is to complete an inspection and test course in London that follows current BS 7671 standards.

By completing and passing the course, you will be able to give proof that you can do inspection and testing of modern electrical systems safely and precisely. Plus, you will also be able to demand a higher salary from your employers.

So, yes, if you are a registered electrician in the UK, it is necessary to have the 18th Edition Certification since 1 January 2020.

According to the latest changes,

From 1 January 2020, registered electricians must hold the (BS 76:71:2018) 18th Edition Certification while renewing their card. Without this certification, registered cardholders will be downgraded to a standard Installation or Maintenance Electrician card.

So if the renewal date of your registered electrician card is approaching soon, you must soon start looking for the best inspection and testing courses in London and complete and pass the course. It will allow you to renew your card with 18th Edition certification if you wish to keep the status of Registered Electrician. Otherwise, this status will be removed.

What Will Happen If I Don’t Have the Status of Registered Electrician?

Without the status of Registered Electrician (RE), you will continue to work as an Installation or Maintenance Electrician gold cardholder and your card will not mention the words “Registered Electrician”.

What if I have an Installation or Maintenance Electrician gold card and kept it updated?

If you are a valid Installation or Maintenance Electrician gold card holder, there is nothing for you to do as long as you are not applying for the Registered Electrician status. Otherwise, it is mandatory to hold the 18th Edition certification.

What if I have an expired Installation or Maintenance Electrician gold card? Will I need the 18th Edition?

If your card is outdated for more than 12 months and you want to renew your card, then yes, it is mandatory for you to hold the 18th Edition and to sign up for Registered Electrician status.
