About the course
The MLP course has been designed specifically for candidate who intend to start a career within the gas industry but either have no associated or limited trade experience.
This learning programme has been developed by LCL Awards in response to the changes to the Gas Industry Standard of Training. This qualification is approved by Gas Safe as an alternative to a traditional gas fitting qualification and covers all of the requirements of IGE/IG/1. By achieving the MLP certificate, candidates will be able to progress onto the ACS domestic assessment in order to obtain the Gas Safe Registration.
This new entrant course consists of Basic Plumbing and Heating Knowledge plus in-depth theory and practical study Gas elements study to allow candidates to gain sufficient knowledge and skills to work safely within the Domestic Gas Industry. The course has been designed to enable the candidates to gain a deeper understanding of the following:
- Introduction to plumbing, gas and heating theory and principles
- Gas legislation , Health and Safety
- Gas Safety (Installation and Use)
- Plumbing and Gas pipework installation
- Electrical system, controls and components
- Heating design, heat loss and comfort conditions
- Unsafe Situations
- Open Flues
- Balanced Flues
- Burner Pressure – Gas Rate and Combustion
- Installation and servicing of Domestic Central Heating and Hot Water Appliances
- Installation and servicing of Domestic Cooking Appliances
- Principles and procedures of Fault Diagnosis
On completion of the MLP course, successful candidates will receive competence certificates for the range of technical elements and an industry recognised MLP training certificate from LCL Awards. Subsequently, successful candidates will be ready to start building the on-site work portfolio under the supervision of qualified Gas Safe registered engineers. Once the on-site portfolio has been submitted, assessed and signed off, the candidate will be ready to undertake the ACS Domestic Initial Assessment.
On-site portfolio – supervised work place practice/experience is to be carried out under the guidance of qualified Gas Safe registered engineers. A Gas Safe qualified engineer acting as a placement mentor will allow the candidate to carry out range of works on a variety of appliances as required by the Certification Body. Evidence of work experience is required to be recorded with photograph and method statement. Candidates will have up to 18 months to complete the on-site portfolio within the valid course framework. if the candidates are not able to work with a registered gas engineer, we can assist to arrange work placement with a suitable gas safe registered engineer. (this is available at an additional cost to the candidate)
16 weeks, 2 days per week, 9am-5pm daily
Applicant must have sufficient understanding of literacy and numeracy.
