To be a construction operative, you will need a good level of fitness. You will need a basic knowledge of building methods and materials. You will also need a good head for heights.

Even though there are no set entry requirements to become a construction operative, you will need specific qualification to entre certain trades, such as road/street work, railway engineering etc. It is an advantage if you have on-site experience as well. Some employers may ask for GCSEs in subjects like maths and English, or equivalent qualifications.

Starting salaries can be up to £15,000 a year. Experienced operatives can earn between £16,000 and £21,000.

Operatives with extra supervisory responsibilities could earn up to £24,000 a year.

Railway engineer can earn between £18,000 and £30,000 a year.
